Overview
Barnawartha is a small, historic village, which also shared the excitement of the gold rush of the 1850s. Barnawartha is nestled in a scenic valley, with several interesting shops and an historic hotel, making a welcome resting place for visitors and beautiful provincial village for film making.
The commerical centre of Barnawartha is built around the junction of High Street and Havelock Street and includes several historical buildings including the Star Hotel, general store, town hall and post office. The Sacred Heart church was established in 1899 and situated across the road from the town's golf course.
History
Barnawartha is a small, historic village, which also shared the excitement of the gold rush of the 1850s. Prior to the town being settled Gustav and William Baumgarten were large land owners. William reported served prison time for supplying horses to the infamous Ned Kelly.
Barnawartha is nestled in a scenic valley and the commercial centre includes several historical buildings including the Star Hotel, general store, town hall and post office (1860). The Sacred Heart church was established in 1899.
Koendidda, built in the gold era, is an historic mansion set in a splendid garden setting. Tastefully restored, it now operates as a bed and breakfast.
