Cudgewa

Overview
Cudgewa is a tiny town in the Upper Murray, 12 kilometres from Corryong, on the Cudgewa Valley Road. The main street is lined with Elm trees providing a tunnel of shade along the street. Cudgewa and the surrounding district has a population of 237.
Cudgewa town is located in a wide and relatively flat valley and surrounded by steep forest covered hills. Wabba Gap is located at the top end of the valley and provides spectacular views down the valley. The Cudgewa creek is known for its fishing and rock-pools for swimming.
To the west Cudgewa is bordered by the Burrowa – Pine Mountain National Park, which features some amazing scarps and cliff faces. A scenic waterfall called the Bluff Falls and surrounding bush-land, is not dissimilar to the famous Australian Blue Mountains. Great bush-walking trails and rugged terrain characterise the surrounds to the pretty Cudgewa Valley. The eastern side of the valley is fringed by Mount Mittamatite which has spectacular boulder fields down its steep Cudgewa facing slope.
History
Cudgewa Post Office opened on 2 June 1879. A Cudgewa North Post Office was open for periods between 1906 and 1930. The township was the last railway station on the Cudgewa Railway Line. This scenic mountain branch-line was progressively opened between 1889 and 1921, and was a major trade and economic life-line carrying timber and livestock out and other materials into the area.
The station was opened on Thursday, 5 May 1921 and closed on Sunday, 1 March 1981. Later in the 1960s Cudgewa became a major railhead of materials for the Snowy Mountains Scheme.
