Jamieson

Overview

Jamieson is a beautiful, scenic rural village nestled in a verdant valley, surrounded by majestic mountains and all but designed for the dynamic film industry. Ideally located at the confluence of the legendary Goulburn and Jamieson Rivers and at the south eastern corner of Lake Eildon, historic buildings and quaint miners huts still abound in Jamieson. Further on from Jamieson lie the gold mining settlements of Gaffney's Creek, Kevington and the remote and character laden Woods Point.

History

Jamieson emerged in the 1860s as a gold mining town when the entire area was swarming with prospectors. Perhaps the smartest were those who set up the breweries and the numerous hotels and brothels in town that catered to the influx of gold miners. The town also benefited from the fact that it was the supply centre to the eastern goldfields, conveying goods by mule train.

Mining had ceased by the start of the First World War although the tailings were reprocessed to extract the last ounce of gold in recent times. Panning is still carried out by the eternally-hopefuls in the Goulburn River.

The township of Woods Point that now boasts a population of approximately 30 was once a bustling centre catering to 50 large mines and hundreds of smaller leases. The relics of 3 suburbs, 30 hotels, a hospital, churches and all the businesses associated with a booming township can be found scattered around the area today.
