Milawa

Overview

The Milawa Gourmet Region is Australia's foremost 'gourmet region', with the idea conceived in 1992. The area is home to the renowned Brown Brothers of Milawa, Milawa Cheese Factory and the Milawa Mustards. It continues to attract those interested in the finest of artisan food and wine and boasts an ideal seasonal climate, fertile soils and fresh water making it the natural place for gourmet enterprise to establish itself.

Milawa is set on the valley floor with the imposing backdrop of Mt Buffalo in the distance to the east and the Warby Ranges to the west. The crossroads at Milawa is quaint with the pub and corner store plus an array of other small shops clustered along an elm flanked road.

History

The township of Milawa was officially named in 1874.  Around these times the town was supported by two corner hotels, a general store, blacksmith, saddler, boot maker, carpenter and a doctor.  In 1889 came the establishment of Brown Brothers Winery, the still successful family winery.

The area was dependant on the dairy industry in these early years and to this day is steeped in agriculture, however the town now has a thriving tourism industry, including Milawa Mustards (est. 1982) and Milawa Cheese company (est. 1988).
