Shepparton

Overview

In the heart of the Goulburn Valley, Shepparton is the fourth largest provincial centre in Victoria at the picturesque confluence of the Goulburn and Broken Rivers.

The township of Shepparton is expansive and features wonderful post production and filming facilities, with the ability to cater to your film needs!

Irrigation channels criss-cross Shepparton, with the primary fruit and dairy industries developing alongside the fast growing viticulture and tomato industries.

Shepparton is a mish mash of historical and modern architecture, traditional and contemporary cuisine and diverse cultural backgrounds that combine to produce a realistic snapshot of today's Australia while providing a backdrop for almost any film genre.

History

The Yorta-Yorta people were the original inhabitants of the region and the first Europeans settled in the area in 1838. With the arrival of irrigation in 1912 Shepparton expanded rapidly, led by a thriving farming sector and dominated by industries such as fruit growing, dairy farming and food processing. Today it is an agricultural powerhouse, hosting a number of national and international food processing plants including Nestle, Kraft and SPC-Ardmona.

The town developed adjacent to the Goulburn River, at a crossing point for miners travelling from the Bendigo goldfields to the new finds in the Beechworth area. As there was no bridge to link rich pastures on either sides of the Goulburn River, a punt was quickly established and the settlement became known as "McGuire's Punt".

The name Shepparton comes from a squatter called Sherbourne Sheppard who held the Tallygaroopna Station. From about 1855 it appears in various documents as a dual name 'Shepparton or McGuire's Punt'. The initial spelling was Sheppardtown or Sheppardton, before coming to its present spelling when the town was surveyed.
