Tintaldra

Overview

Tintaldra is a picturesque village situated beneath the Snowy Mountains on the southern banks of the Murray River.  The town has developed around agriculture and tourism and because of its historical value and superb location on the banks of the beautiful upper Murray River, Tintaldra is a very interesting town to film.

Tintaldra's economy is based around agriculture. The Tintaldra store, constructed in 1864 with rough hewn River Red Gum beams and rafters and walls made from vertical slats of Stringybark timber, is still standing today.

History

In 1837, when a severe seven year drought first hit the Monaro district, Charles Huon de Kerrilleau was but one squatter who went in search of fresh grass and water.  He became the first known white man in the Tintaldra area when he was led to this district on the Murray River the an Aboriginal guide.  The story reached the ears of local landowner Rowland Shelley who dashed off to claim the 'Tintaldra' run for his brother Williams and the 'Welaregang' run for himself.

These cattle stations were the first while settlements on the upper Murray.  Historic Tintaldra Store is Heritage Listed.  The town began to form around 1854 as unlucky prospectors began to look for land to farm. Its location as a crossing point over the Murray River and its associated customs house led to a boom period in the late 19th century.

Federation and the development of other river crossings into New South Wales led to a slow decline. Soldier settlers moved to the area after World War I. Much of Tintaldra was burnt to the ground in the Black Friday bushfires of 13 January 1939.
