Towong

Overview
Towong is located at the upper reaches of the Murray River in North East Victoria, in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. Towong is noted for its pure crystal clear waterways and fresh high country air. Film makers will find hidden mountain huts, grand scenic views, wide open valley floors, mountain horsemen, wildlife mecca, untouched historic gold mines (and tunnels), crystal clear waterways, huge accessible wilderness areas.
The tiny township of Towong is nestled into the signature valley (the Upper Murray Valley) and the surrounding mountains and the town's history and beauty are a must see for film makers.
History
Towong was laid out in 1861 with land sales proceeding in 1867. It has a noted turf club established in 1871 with the racecourse and grandstand used in the filming of Phar Lap.
In 1928 noted Australian identity Squizzy Taylor and his gang created a fracas and stole a substantial sum of money in the confusion. He then stopped at Corryong where he robbed a local publican.
