Walwa

Overview
The township of Walwa abounds in quaint country charm and hospitality. Film makers wishing to visit Walwa should visit Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park, one of the largest monolith's in the southern hemisphere at 1.5 times larger than Uluru.
Near the Murray River, Walwa showcases the abundance of tranquility and beauty of the Upper Murray. Further away from the river, there is a rugged Granite boulder and thick forest clad mountains feel. The back Walwa Road fringes Burrowa Mountain and ends in the pine plantation forests of the Shelley area. The relatively flat but very windy Murray River Road is a fantastic place to film motorbikes, vintage cars or other touring themes with scenic forest/river side backgrounds.
History
The first home built in the Walwa area was in 1848 by Sydney Grandison Watson, who settled on large tracts of farming land throughout the Upper Murray district. The first Post Office opened in 1861. By 1875 Joseph Hanna and family had bought land and built homes mostly to the west of the present town.
Walwa township had a Blacksmith, Saddler, Butcher, Hotel, General Store and Post Office established by 1880. A Coffee Palace was built in 1890.
Near the Junction of Sandy Creek – Guys Forest Road a Butter factory and School were built, before being transferred to the present School township site after the 1942 fire, the Butter factory then moved to near the old Murray River Bridge leading to Jingellic, until it closed in the late 1960s.
